Tonkin Bay Redux

The BBC (Those Commies) includes video shot from the Iranian side perhaps earlier in a, what appears to be, routine exchange... They really are little speed boats and I understand that you could conceiveably pack them with explosives and ram them into the side of a battle ship but, why?

The disembodied voice at the end just sounds silly and nothing like the Iranian captain communicating with the American ships earlier.

Update: ABC News reports the USN is uncertain just where the disembodied voice came from... as fish tales go, this ones getting a lot fishier. Not that anyone could accuse this administration of making stuff up and stuff, I mean their record is impeccable when it comes to telling the American people the truth!

Wasn't it just this past summer when the Iranians took a bunch of British sailors hostage? So, it's be completely out of character for them to engage in provocative behavior, right?

I love how your first instinct is to blame America whenever something happens. It's always America's fault. Iran is the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism. They've been arming, training and assisting killers of Americans in Iraq. But we're the bad guys, right?

If it weren't for the US Navy keeping the Straits open, we'd all be paying $200 for a barrel of oil and then I guess we'd find out what economic hardship is really like.

They're trying to provoke an incident. If our ships had fired and blown their shitty little boats to Allah, you could have seen a market crisis and a big spike in oil prices. Good for them, bad for us. Another blow to our economy, more financial stress.

They are at war with us. They are our sworn enemy. Their long-standing goal is our destruction.

I hope we communicated to them in no uncertain terms that if they try another stunt like that we will send their sailors to Allah, and then the cruise missiles will start for a week or so, followed by a couple months of airstrikes.

Fuck'em.

If you read my post, you will see I do not blame America, I blame this administration and if you are prepared for the ramifications and unneccessary bloodshed that will result from starting a war with Iran under dubious circumstances then you really are as unhinged as your comments suggest.

The American people and the international community are going to be a tad more sceptical of any claims coming from this administration based on their mismanagement and manipulation of intelligence on Iraq.

From all reports coming out of 'reputable' news agencies and governments with skin in the game, the patrol boats actions are a common and regular occurance in the Straits and are not acts of aggression or provocation.

With the imflammatory rhetoric that comes out of this WH it is understandable that our military in the field is a little edgy and may overreact to what appears to have been a routine encounter. They must be ready for anything, including being gamed into over reacting, and appeared well drilled.

Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed on board our ships and an international incident was avoided.

Your willingness to throw our service men and women to the wolves at the slightest inference of perceived threat is obviously the reaction of a man struggling with his own inadequacies by continually fantasizing that a coke sniffing, draft dodging drunkard from Texas is the saviour of the free world.

It's all swagger and no substance... this is the greatest nation the world has ever seen, it's time we returned to acting like it and stop with the bluster and bullying of a tin pot banana republic so insecure that we have to kill the things we don't understand.
